The Climb
Since 2001, Francisco Montenegro has held the dual role of winemaker and founder-owner at Aneto Wines. The title is administrative on paper, but the work is defined by close reading: of site, of season, of how Penajoia translates into wine. Montenegro’s practice stays anchored to place, with the kind of attention that comes from working the same ground long enough to know its contours.
Today
“We are in the transition zone between Penajóia and Barrô with 8 hectares of vines grown mostly in the plateau region at 400 meters altitude.” The line is precise because the work demands precision. With 8 hectares set in a transition zone and carried mostly on the plateau at 400 meters, the vineyard is defined by scale and position as much as by crop. Montenegro’s language treats those details as working facts, not embellishment. That same discipline carries into the cellar. “The fermentations occur at low temperature with native yeast for a long period of 3 to 4 weeks.” Low temperature, native yeast, and a 3 to 4 week fermentation window point to a process that gives time a central role. It is a method built on control and patience, with the aim of letting the ferment proceed without hurry.
In Their Words “We are in the transition zone between Penajóia and Barrô with 8 hectares of vines grown mostly in the plateau region at 400 meters altitude.” “We have verified that our white wines have a good ability to remain fresh and with a good natural evolution over several years.” Taken together, the quotes show a winemaker working from site outward and then back again to the wine in bottle. The first fixes the vineyard in geographic terms; the second speaks to longevity, freshness, and steady natural evolution over several years. The emphasis is not on flourish but on what can be verified through repetition and time.
Recognition
“We have verified that our white wines have a good ability to remain fresh and with a good natural evolution over several years.” The recognition here is technical rather than ceremonial. It rests on verification, on repeated observation of how the white wines hold freshness and evolve over several years.
