Elsenburg Agriculture College gave Frank Meaker the technical grounding for a career in wine, setting him up for work defined by timing, temperature, and judgment. He began at Distillers Corporation in Stellenbosch, entering the part of the trade where process and precision already matter. What followed was a measured progression through the Cape wine world, with each post adding range to a reputation built on control, steadiness, and technical fluency. Cellarmaster roles at L’Ormarins and Blaauwklippen in Stellenbosch placed Frank Meaker at the center of cellar work, where the key decisions are often the ones nobody sees until the wine is poured. In those positions, consistency became part of the brief. The trust attached to his name came from repeatable work, practical skill, and the ability to hold a line across vintages. Winemaking operations leadership at Trawal Winery in Trawal, Olifantsrivier region, and later at Wellington broadened that remit beyond the cellar door. The move from cellarmaster to operations leader marked an expansion in scope while keeping the discipline of wine production at the center. Today, Frank Meaker is cellarmaster and CEO of Org de Rac, a dual role that brings cellar management and estate direction into the same working frame.

Today

A dual title like this points to two kinds of labor: the detail work of the cellar and the broader decisions that shape an estate. It requires a hand for structure as well as a feel for the minute choices that determine quality, moving between oversight and execution without losing either. Merlot is the variety that frames Frank Meaker’s specialist work. His technical emphasis on clones and terroir treats difference as a practical question, not a talking point. The method is direct: read the material, read the site, and understand how each parcel expresses itself differently. That approach keeps the work grounded in what the vineyard gives and what the cellar can preserve.
