i. Biography
Born in Lahr in western Baden and raised in Oberbergen in the Kaiserstuhl hills of Baden-Württemberg, Friedrich Keller came up with wine as part of the working environment rather than as a specialist pursuit. In 2015, he apprenticed to his father, Fritz Keller, at Weingut Franz Keller, entering a family setting where vineyard work and hospitality were already treated as adjacent trades.
The Climb
Training at Geisenheim gave Friedrich Keller a formal base before he moved through Weingut Dr. Heger in Baden, Stark-Condé in South Africa, and Domaine Paul Pillot in Burgundy. Those stages added practical range: training, cellar discipline, and a view of how different regions interpret the same craft in different registers. Since 2015, Friedrich has served as General Manager of Weingut Franz Keller, carrying that background into the day-to-day work of steering the estate.
Today
The brief is straightforward: expressive wines with their own identity. For Keller, that means wines that are clear in intent and held in check, without excess. He ties that work to the table, where wine is meant to function as part of a larger meal rather than as a separate performance. “That’s why the production of wines as the ideal accompaniment to a meal is of particularly importance to us,” he says, setting out a working philosophy in which cellar and kitchen remain closely connected disciplines.
Signature
Friedrich Keller makes dry Pinot Gris. The style is defined, gastronomic, and aimed at precision at the table rather than ornament. It sits within the wider direction of his work at Weingut Franz Keller, where expression is paired with a disciplined view of how wine should move with food.
In Their Words “Our Restaurant Schwarzer Adler, our winery has had a Michelin star since 1969 – and thus also a culinary DNA.” The line places Restaurant Schwarzer Adler at the center of how Keller describes the estate. The Michelin star since 1969 is presented not as a standalone claim, but as part of a longer working inheritance that links the winery to the standards of the dining room.
Recognition
Keller describes the winery’s culinary connection through Restaurant Schwarzer Adler: “Our Restaurant Schwarzer Adler, our winery has had a Michelin star since 1969 – and thus also a culinary DNA.” Read plainly, the recognition is not framed as a decorative accolade; it is part of the estate’s identity, binding Weingut Franz Keller to a way of thinking about wine that is the meal.
