Since 2006, Spanier has been winemaker at Weingut Kühling-Gillot in Bodenheim, Rheinhessen, Germany. The role is specific to place: Bodenheim is the working ground, and the cellar is where that place is read and translated into wine, year after year. He also works at Battenfeld-Spanier in Hohen-Sülzen. The two posts split his attention between cellar work and vineyard management, linking the practical decisions of making wine with the broader responsibilities that support it. The current picture is a Rheinhessen practice with two fixed points: founder since 1991, and winemaking at Weingut Kühling-Gillot since 2006.
