José María Ruiz founded Pago de Carraovejas in 1987 with the goal of making a benchmark Ribera del Duero wine from the slopes below Peñafiel Castle. A restaurateur, sommelier and wine entrepreneur, he remains the foundational figure behind the Ruiz Aragoneses family's wider Alma Carraovejas group.
