Training at the University of Pretoria and Elsenburg Agricultural College gave Kevin Grant the technical base for a career that later moved into head winemaking at Hamilton Russell in Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa (1995–2004). Those years established a method defined by clarity, restraint and close reading of place. Since 2004, he has been winemaker and owner of Ataraxia Mountain Vineyards, where the work has continued with steady attention to what the land is asking for.

Where They Are Now

“Primarily I'm a soil farmer.” That line is the working brief behind the cellar at Ataraxia. Ataraxia Chardonnay is the reference point: barrel-fermented, described as a Cape benchmark and noted for regularly topping South African Chardonnay tastings. It is made to carry site detail without excess, with texture and precision doing the work. The Sauvignon Blanc is primarily sourced from the cool coastal Elgin ward, where it is associated with a herbal and citrus profile shaped by sea air and measured sunlight. Serenity, a cool-climate red blend of Pinot Noir, Cinsaut and Pinotage, extends that site-led approach into Cape red-wine terrain.

Signature

Kevin's signature wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Serenity, and Ataraxia Chardonnay. Together, they show a cellar working through variation, texture and restraint, with each wine carrying its own site markers while remaining part of the same approach.

Honors

Recognition sits in the wines themselves and in the training behind them. University of Pretoria and Elsenburg Agricultural College provided the foundation, while the work has gone on to be read through soil, exposure, height, light and wind rather than cellar display. The result is precision over flourish, with place kept in the foreground.
