Murray Barlow

Training at the University of Adelaide gave Murray Barlow the base that still shows in the work: measured cellar decisions, close reading of vineyard conditions, and the discipline to let a wine resolve on its own terms. That sort of grounding matters most over time. Since 2012, as winemaker of Rustenberg Wines, Barlow has worked from that same framework of precision and patience.

At Rustenberg Wines in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Barlow holds both the winemaking and marketing remit, with the estate’s identity carrying through from vineyard and cellar to the way the wines are presented beyond the farm. The work asks for consistency across two different registers: one rooted in production, the other in presentation. Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon shows that approach in single-vineyard form. Named for the patriarch who acquired the farm in 1941, and sourced from the estate’s oldest Cabernet block, it ties naming, site, and legacy to the same wine.

The point is not ornament but specificity: a flagship drawn from material with a clear place in the estate’s structure. Five Soldiers Chardonnay is the white counterpart, built from a single vineyard and named for the five stone pine trees above the block. Made as a barrel selection of the finest Chardonnay each year, it reflects selection as a craft discipline. The wine’s definition comes from restraint and sorting, not from volume or noise.

Rustenberg Straw Wine widens the estate’s range and shows the practical breadth expected of the cellar. Across the portfolio, farming, weather, and risk remain part of the brief. Those are not side notes; they are the conditions under which each vintage is made. It is a plain statement of the job: assess, hold position, and let the evidence come in before drawing a final line.
