The Climb
Training at the University of Adelaide gave Barlow the technical base that supports his return to the Stellenbosch estate. Since 2012, he has farmed full time with his parents at Rustenberg Wines, while also working as winemaker and marketing lead. The role asks for range: vineyard and cellar on one side, the task of shaping the estate’s public identity on the other.
Today
Ownership, winemaking, and marketing oversight sit together in Barlow’s work at the Stellenbosch estate. His stated approach is to keep the house close to traditional methods and styles while still allowing for modern improvements and advancements. That leaves the wines in a narrow but deliberate balance: continuity first, with refinement where it can be justified. Named bottlings carry that logic further, using family and vineyard references as markers of place rather than decoration. Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon is the single-vineyard flagship named for the patriarch who acquired the farm in 1941, and it comes from the oldest Cabernet block on the estate. Five Soldiers Chardonnay is the single-vineyard flagship white, named for the five stone pine trees that stand sentinel over the block, with each vintage drawn from a barrel selection of the finest Chardonnay. In both wines, the naming points back to site, family line, and selection discipline.
