Péter Bakonyi’s path into wine was not a sudden leap, but a steady ascent shaped by study, discipline, and an early sense that the subject held more than simple craft. He trained at Lajos Nagy High School and the University of Horticulture before stepping into winemaking, carrying with him the kind of foundation that suggests both patience and precision. The repetition of place in those years feels fitting: Villány is not merely a line on a résumé, but a setting in which his professional identity was sharpened, layered, and tested. Today, Péter is founder and owner of Bakonyi Pincészet / Bakonyi Winery (since 2011), a role that places him at the center of his own work rather than in service to someone else’s vision. Building a winery of one’s own is never only administrative; it is a statement of temperament. In Péter’s case, the cellar he shapes seems to reflect the same exacting sensibility that marked the earlier stages of his career—measured, self-defined, and attentive to detail.

His own background adds another layer to that story. “My hometown of Nagyatád is not in a wine region, but my father made his own wine for his own consumption from his hobby vineyard in Ötvöskónyi.” In that memory lies a private origin story, one rooted less in grand terroir mythology than in family habit and hands-on example. The vineyard in Ötvöskónyi, modestly described, becomes an early point of connection: a place where wine was first encountered not as prestige, but as something personal, made at home and kept close.

Péter’s signature wines include Széllel szemben, Csavargó, PétNat bio Olaszrizling-Királyleányka 2022, and Makar.
