    i. Biography

    Shinjiro Torii (1879–1962) was the founder of Suntory and a pioneer of Japan’s western-style liquor industry. Official Suntory materials identify him as the founder who began Yamazaki Distillery in 1923 to create whisky suited to the Japanese palate, and the National Diet Library describes him as the founder of Suntory and the earlier Akadama Port Wine business.
