Zsófia Kövesdi has reached that post through technical control and persistence in a field that has not always made room as readily as it should have. On the subject of gendered pressure in the trade, Kövesdi has said plainly: "But being a female winemaker is still terribly difficult."

Today

As head winemaker, Kövesdi is responsible for Jammertal Wine Estate’s winemaking direction. The work is about maintaining house style season after season, weighing instinct against discipline, and giving vineyard, cellar, and final blend a single line. In practice, it is a role where small adjustments alter the structure and finish of the wine.

Signature

Cassiopeia Merlot 2015, Koh-I-Noor 105.6 2019, Koh-I-Noor Merlot 2017, Cassiopeia MCS*Achird 2018, and Ars Poetica Syrah 2021 mark the range of Kövesdi’s work at Jammertal Wine Estate. Across those bottlings, the throughline is a measured handling of structure and nuance, with the style moving between power and finesse rather than settling into one register. In that sense, the wines make the method legible: texture, depth, and finish doing the work.

In Their Words “Of course, I have my ways of dealing with this, but it is very surprising to see that today, after all this time and all this professional recognition, this still happens.” The remark reads as practical account, not performance: a record of what persistence costs in a profession that still carries old assumptions. Kövesdi also points to the field shifting around her: “There are many more female winemakers today than in the last 10-20 years, and there are also more and more aspiring female winemakers.” That is the line between present conditions and the next cohort coming through.

International Female Winemaker of the Year 2023 (2023) is among Kövesdi’s honors.
