Dan Petroski

Massican is built around a defined point of view: Dan Petroski calls himself “the founder and winemaker of Massican, a California winery, and an advocate of all things Italian.” That framing matters in trade terms. It puts authorship, production, and perspective in the same sentence, so the work reads as both cellar practice and editorial stance. Petroski uses the role to shape the winery and the conversation around it.

His background comes through study and time in the field. Columbia University and NYU Stern gave Petroski an academic base that combines discipline with business training. He then worked as a vineyard worker at Vineyard in Sicily, followed by time as winemaker at Larkmead Winery in Napa. Taken together, those steps move from classroom to vineyard to cellar, with each stage adding to the way he approaches wine. Since 2009, Petroski has served as founder and winemaker at Massican, a date that marks continuity rather than a short run.

He also serves as chair, board of directors of Napa Valley Grapegrowers, which places him in the wider regional structure as well as inside his own label. The career line is practical and outward-facing at once: making wine, running a winery, and taking part in the work of the region. Today Massican’s work sits on the overlap between ownership and winemaking, and Petroski holds both sides of that structure as founder and winemaker.
