Single-vineyard Malbec is where Daniel Pi’s work at Trapiche has been most clearly defined: a style built around site, selection, and the discipline of letting the vineyard register in the glass. At Bodega Trapiche in Mendoza, Argentina, his role as Chief Winemaker since the 2000s, and more specifically as Chief Winemaker of Trapiche since 2002, has centered on that balance between farm and cellar. The point is not to separate those sides of production, but to keep them in step. In wine education and panel work, evaluation has been part of the same practice. Daniel Pi has served as judge and permanent member of the tasting panel at Argentina Wine Awards from 2009, and as Head Professor at Don Bosco Oenological University of Mendoza. Those roles place tasting, comparison, and instruction alongside production, which is consistent with a winemaking approach that treats judgment as part of craft, not an afterthought. The change in emphasis under his watch is stated plainly by Pi himself: “When I took over, that changed.” Read in context, the line points to a winery philosophy that moved toward greater coherence between vineyard and cellar, and toward wines that aim to carry their origins without disconnect between source and result.

Trapiche Single-vineyard Malbecs define Daniel Pi’s signature, with Finca Ambrosia Terroir Series Single Vineyard Malbec, Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec 2012, and Tres14 also marking the range of his work. The through line is Malbec, but the focus is not generic variety; it is definition through place, with each bottle framed as a specific expression rather than a broad style statement.
