A different kind of training came first: Greg Brewer started as a French instructor at University of California, Santa Barbara. From there, the work moved into wine production training at Santa Barbara Winery (from 1991), where the shift was from classroom structure to the practical language of fermentation and cellar work. In 1997, he became winemaker at Melville Winery, a role he held until 2015, and that long run helped sharpen the exacting approach associated with his name. Brewer-Clifton became the central platform for that approach, with Greg Brewer as co-founder and winemaker since 1996. From there, he extended the same discipline into Diatom, where he has been founder and winemaker since 2005, and Ex Post Facto, which he founded and for which he has served as winemaker since 2016. Across those projects, the focus stays on balance, texture, and the controlled expression that comes when fruit, place, and cellar decisions are kept in alignment.

Where They Are Now

At Brewer-Clifton Winery in Lompoc, Greg Brewer remains founder and winemaker, working with the measured confidence of long practice. His own framing of the work is direct: “The goal is the beauty and synchronicity of the system.” That idea matches a career built across instruction, production, and multiple labels, with each step reinforcing the same operational idea: the best results come when the system is working cleanly.

Signature

Greg’s signature wines include Diatom Chardonnay, Ex Post Facto, and Machado Vineyard Pinot Noirs. Those wines mark the shape of his style through precision, structure, and the decision to let character emerge through handling rather than effect. Diatom Chardonnay points to clarity and nuance; Ex Post Facto carries the more exploratory side of the portfolio; and Machado vineyard Pinot Noirs show how site can be carried into the glass in a composed way. Taken together, they sit within the broader Brewer-Clifton framework, where the work is less about a single emphatic statement than about sustained attention to place.
