The Climb

Training at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) gave Luis Duarte the technical base that would carry into cellar practice. What began in the classroom matured into a discipline of detail, where precision became less a method than a habit. Over time, that foundation aligned with the steady, unforced style that defines his work. Today, Luis is consulting winemaker of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova (since 2003), in a partnership shaped by consistency, patience, and close attention to the character of the estate.

Today

The work is framed by minimal handling and traditional vinification in lagares, with the cellar serving to clarify rather than overwrite. “This wine, traditionally vinified in lagares with minimal intervention, seeks to express our respect for our terroir.” That sentence points directly to the method: texture, balance, and fidelity held ahead of ornament. In Luis Duarte’s practice, the cellar’s job is to keep faith with what the vineyard has already put in place.

Signature

Luis's signature wines include Marias da Malhadinha red wine, Peceguina, Rubrica Red, and Rubrica White. Read together, they show the range of his contribution: estate wines that hold a shared identity while moving across structure, freshness, and depth within the same consistent approach.

In Their Words “Since the launch of its first vintage, Marias da Malhadinha has been a wine where we aim to showcase the best of what Alentejo and Malhadinha have to offer.” “At no point were any of these principles compromised, and, as one can understand, it hasn’t always been easy over these 22 years.” The quotes point to long-horizon cellar work: first vintage to present, principle to execution, and the discipline required to hold a course across more than two decades.

Recognition

Luis's honors include Order of Business Merit, Agricultural Merit class (2015) and Best Winemaker in Portugal (1997). Together, these recognitions mark a career that has received both professional distinction and formal acknowledgment within Portugal's wine landscape.
