Sam Ward is the managing director of Umbel Restaurant Group, the Simon Rogan-led hospitality group centered on L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria. He grew up in Grange-over-Sands near Cartmel and began his hospitality career at age 22 as bar manager before moving to London to work as a sommelier at The Ritz, then returned to Cumbria as maître d’ at L’Enclume. By 2020 he had been promoted from operations director to managing director of Simon Rogan restaurants worldwide, and later coverage described him as a partner in the business.
