i. Biography
The Path
Winemaking at Peay Vineyards in Cloverdale has been Vanessa Wong’s post since 2001, and the continuity matters. A long tenure in one place usually points to more than staying power: it suggests an ongoing, technical conversation with site, house style, and season after season of adjustment. Wong has described the work plainly: “As a winemaker, my job is to coax out and accentuate the defining characteristics of the grapes to produce wines of distinction.” That formulation says enough about the method—observe closely, intervene lightly, and keep the grape’s own character in view. Training at University of California, Davis gave Wong a formal base for that approach. Before winemaking became the center of the work, she was in San Francisco in wine retail and catering, where the industry is learned in real time through service, repetition, and tasting. Peter Michael Winery (1996–2000) followed, first as assistant winemaker and then winemaker, a sequence that moved her from supporting the process to directing it. Winemaker roles at Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac and Domaine Jean Gros in Vosne-Romanée widened the frame further. Those are places where precision and inheritance are part of the job description, and Wong’s path through them reads as accumulation rather than display: school, service, cellar, and then work across estates that place a premium on discipline. Today, Vanessa Wong is still the winemaker of Peay Vineyards (since 2001), and the length of that association is part of the story of the wines as much as the person.
The Work Today
Since 2001, the central fact has remained the same: Wong in the winemaker role at Peay Vineyards in Cloverdale. That kind of continuity is a form of craft knowledge in itself. It gives room for repetition, comparison, and refinement over time, rather than one-off statements. She has also said, “The whole family is involved.” Read against the work, that line points to the structure around the cellar: not an anonymous production line, but a collaborative setting where the labor is shared and the standards are kept collectively.
Signature
Les Pavots Knights Valley 1999 and Chardonnay Sonoma County Belle Cote 1999 are the signature wines tied to Wong’s name here. They mark an early defining point in her record, with the kind of specificity that lets a career be read through bottlings rather than biography alone.
In Their Words “I liked how wine was this very fascinating intersection between science, agriculture, culture, gastronomy and even art or a craft, rather.” “As a winemaker, my job is to coax out and accentuate the defining characteristics of the grapes to produce wines of distinction.”
Acclaim
At Peter Michael Winery, Wong was responsible for Les Pavots Knights Valley 1999 and Chardonnay Sonoma County Belle Cote 1999, both identified as impressive wines from that period. The notice attached to those bottles registers early recognition of the same qualities her later work continues to suggest: attention to detail, restraint, and a clear read on what the fruit can carry.
